My Top 5 Summer Books

Standard

Salam dear readers,

Since it’s finally fall, I wanted to give you a wrap up of my summer.

Summer is over alhamduli’ALLAH.. YAAAAY!!! I have mixed feelings about this. Summer in Marrakesh is somehow unbearable, but it’s one of the characteristics that makes Marrakesh what it is; and alhamduli’ALLAH we got through it. Yes, I will miss the free time, the travelling, the beach, and all the reading that I could do. But still I’m a “pro-Rain/Cold” person.

Today I want to share with you my  top 5 books that I’ve read this summer.

This summer, I read some very good books, some bad ones and some average. I also reread 2 of my favorite books and I really enjoyed rereading them. I won’t talk much about these books but I will try to give reviews of them very soon insha’ALLAH.

You can see more about the books that I’m reading on my Goodreads profile.

Let’s start:

Living Dead Girl:

This book (sigh) … This book can’t be easily described or talked about. It’s a young adult/contemporary novel written by Elizabeth Scott. Let me just say that it’s the most disturbing book I’ve read in awhile (if not ever). It deals with kidnapping, rape, pedophilia, family, identity… I couldn’t put it down and I got really scared while reading it. I couldn’t/didn’t want to imagine what was happening. I didn’t like reading some/most of the content and I was reading it really quickly trying not to pay attention to what’s been described. I don’t want to spoil the book, but I will try to give a review of it very soon. I gave this book 4 stars on Goodreads.

The Great Gatsby:

I can’t give this less than 5 stars. This was my third time reading this, and it was even better.  I love reading it and rereading it and talking about it over and over again. every time I read it, I discover new things about it that I didn’t notice before. This book is about dreams, lost love, wealth,  and society. I can’t express why I love this books clearly, but it’s just one of my favorite books of all time. I gave a book review a very long time, but I think I will write another well developed review very soon insha’ALLAH.

The Trouble with Women:

Have you ever noticed that women are rarely mentioned in our history books and courses?? I did for sure. This book deals with that in a very simple funny way. It’s a nonfiction feminist interpretation of this whole subject written by Jacky Fleming. I read this in one sitting, and I really really enjoyed it. You can read it in an hour or so. It contains sequential art and that helps in the structure and the goal of the book as a whole. Again I will go in depth in a review of this book in a day or so insha’ALLAH. I gave it 4 stars.

Steal Like an Artist:

This is a very interesting read. It’s written by Austin Kleon,a young writer and artist who create wonderful things in what he writes and speak about.  This should be read by every student, every blogger, writer, teacher… Basically EVERYONE. The message is really powerful. It just tells humans everywhere that they don’t need to be genius, they just need to be themselves, and to know what they want. It has great tips that I tried to put into practice immediately. “Creativity is everywhere. It is for everyone” and that’s in itself is a life/mind changing

ساق البامبو

This is an Arabic book entitled “The Bamboo Stalk” written by Saud Alsanousi. This was probably one of the best books that I’ve read in my entire life. The language use is so beautiful. It shows how much love the writer has for the Arabic language; this love reaches the reader, and make him appreciate the language even better. It has an amazing story with very unique characters. Th events take place between Kuwait and the Philippines.  It tackles different subjects like:  race, identity, family, sense of belonging, social classes, and other universal struggles. I will definitely recommend this book. Go and read it.

That’s it for today. Let me know in the comments of your favorite books of this summer and what do you think  of mine.

Talk to you soon insha’ALLAH.

Back Again… Back to Stay… Maybe!?

Standard

Salam dear readers,

Yes, it’s been a long long time since I posted anything in here. It’s the longest of them all.

The good news is that I’m still alive. YeeeY 😉 😉

But there are some things to talk about.

So.. Before starting blogging again; we need to talk; meaning I need to talk and explain, and.. confess. First, what is the problem? Why do I take so much time to blog? Is it time? Is it being busy? Or is it just because I don’t love blogging that much or enough?

Yes,sometimes I don’t have time, and sometimes I’m too tired. But that’s not an excuse nor is being busy or having so many tasks to do, or travelling; because there are times when I’m not.

The next question is whether I really love blogging; because it does not seem like I do; right? Well, I really do. I love writing and I love sharing all that with you. I really like sharing my ideas and my views with you. I like showing you what I love and what I don’t. I love the whole act, the whole blogging process.

Sometimes it is good to take a step back, and just be honest with yourself. I want to be a better blogger and I will work on that.

So, what should I do?

I need to change all that soon.. NOW.

I need to show that I care; that I really love doing this.
I need to be organized.
I need to work on my skills as a blogger.
I need your help.

The next question is: how can YOU help?? Well, it’s easy. Just give me suggestions, topics to talk about, ways to improve this, ask me questions, give me challenges, reasonable ones not the crazy type. I really hope you will help. Thank you in advance 🙂 😉 😉

This is all for today. I will talk to you very soon insha’ALLAH.

Song of the day

Standard

Salam dear readers,

It’s been a while since I did this.

Fact about me: I like songs with a message, a purpose. I love good music.

This is a song that I first heard a year ago, and I really love it. I respect this artist, and I’m very obsessed with most of his songs; I know that I’m definitely not the only one. Whenever I feel stressed, sad or moody; or even better, when I’m happy (anytime, anywhere actually) I listen to his songs.

This one has beautiful words, with a beautiful massage, and a beautiful rhythm (again most of his songs have that). Not so many people talk about this though (I know, even if it has 4,039,024 views on YouTube) , and I think they should.

As a Muslim and an Arab, his songs appeal to me, because of its message, values, and meaning. But even if you’re not an Arab or a Muslim, I highly recommend this for you. It has the English translation on it, so you will enjoy it for sure.

I know many talk about “اضحك“”Smile”,”كن أنت“”Be you”, and “لغات العالم“”the language of the words”; which are the most famous; these are my favorite as well. This one is really worth listening to; so go and do it if you didn’t already.

Talk to you soon insha’ALLAH.

Kaoutar’s Book Thoughts: Three Men in a Boat

Standard

Salam dear readers,

These are my thoughts on Three Men in Boat by Jerome K. Jerome.

I’ve just finished reading this book. It took me awhile to read it, but I read most of it in the past 3 days, so I think that is a good thing 📚📚📚📚📚 “Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need – a homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends, worth the name, someone to love and someone to love you, a cat, a dog, and a pipe or two, enough to eat and enough to wear, and a little more than enough to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing. ” ☺📚☺📚☺📚☺ I give it a 4 ☆ out of 5. At first, I thought of giving it 3,5 but it’s worth more. It made me smile, laugh, and think. It is full of knowledge, and it just brushes up my British history knowledge. At some point, it can seem hard to follow, specially with the heavy description of London streets, rivers, and monuments. But it’s just a unique book. I don’t know why, but while reading it, it keeps reminding me of Charlie Chaplin and all those silent funny movies. I imagined the characters as those actors with their outfit, hats, and all those beautiful characteristics. It is also based on real events that the author and his friends experienced, so that’s definitely a plus. The book shows that the author is a man of experience, that he knows what he’s talking about, that he has a very smart sense of humor, and that he’s wise. I really recommend this to all of you dear readers, especially to the ones who like a good funny British classic. 🔭📚🔭📚📚🔭📚🔭 That's it… I’m going to go back now to reading my other Arabic book 😊☺😊 #me #reading #books #bookstagram #bookphotography #bookworm #morocco #marrakech #instalike #instagood #beauty #nature #igreads #currentread #whatareyoureading #boat #classic #كتب #اقرأ #كتبي ر

I read this book last month, and I already expressed how much I liked it. Who says that British classic humor can be hard to grasp? This book shows absolutely the opposite. This meant to be a travelogue, but ended up as a very funny book.

This is the story of three men – Jerome and his two friends, Harris and George and their dog. They decide to take a trip in a boat (something that was common in those days) in the River Thames in Oxford, England to cure themselves after they suffered from some weird ailment.  While narrating, he mentions all the villages and landmarks he and his friends pass, such as Marlow, Hampton Church, Magna Carta Island, … The books is also full of funny stories that happened to the characters or people they know. These stories will make you laugh out loud. There are stories of friends, historical figures, and even stories that happened to Montmorency, the dog.

The book also describes the common events  and situations that can happen in our everyday life. Even for today’s modern life, these situations are still relevant. You can still relate to the characters/ real people.  It has a beautiful sense of wisdom combined with a brilliant wit, which you can just love 😀

It refreshes your knowledge of many things. 3 years ago, I took a “British Culture”class, so this reminds me of what I like about that subject. I like studying and knowing more about the British history, so I really liked it when he was talking about the Magna Carta, the history behind certain streets and homes, and the earliest kings and queens of the UK,

Things I did not like: The ending was a bit quick, since their return journey was not described in full detailed, and it was just in one chapter. Also, sometimes you will find it hard to keep with some of the description, but you can’t help but love it.

I recommend this for the following reasons:

  1. It’s a classic. No need to explain more
  2. It’s funny in a smart way. For example, there is this “German language” story that made me giggle, and I’m sure it will give you the same feel.
  3. It’s full of knowledge. I’m sure you like books that make you know more, so go and try this 😉

Rate: 4/5

I have chosen to change this section from “book reviews” to “Kaoutar’s Book Thoughts”, they are my own spontaneous first thoughts; because I don’t want to give a full detailed review. These are just my thoughts on a certain book: why I loved it/ hated it. I love talking about books, but I don’t like to spoil them 😉

This is my favorite quote in the book. I actually highlighted it in my copy, which I rarely do (try not to do/ hate to do) in books.

“Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need – a homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends, worth the name, someone to love and someone to love you, a cat, a dog, and a pipe or two, enough to eat and enough to wear, and a little more than enough to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing. ”

That is for today. Keep reading books, and checking my blog 😉 Talk to you soon insha’ALLAH.

January_March: Things that I enjoyed in the past 3 months

Standard

Salam dear readers,

I hope you’re doing great.  Today I’ll share with you some simple things that made me happy, or rather things that just made a change in my life in the past 3 months.

Books

Reading 19 books in the past 3 months made me so happy, even though I didn’t enjoy many/most of them, but that’s OK.

Book hauls

I bought several books that I’m so excited to read,

A classical book haul, YAAYYY 💃💃💃💃. Yesterday, my little sister went to this book expository in #Casablanca, and I asked her to buy me some books if she was able to find them, and she did 💕💕💕💕 These are 6 beautiful classical books that I wanted to read and have my own copy of for so long. I really loved the covers, and I know I’m going to enjoy reading them insha'ALLAH 😊 😊 😊 I jumped from joy when I got them 😊😊 A little quote of mine: Happiness is a bunch of books you hold in your hands 😇😇😇 You’re going to see a lot of this in my profile for sure 😊😊😊 PS. Many thanks to mom, dad, @hafssachahbane, @mido.mouad, and @sarra_chahbane. Love you all 💕💕💕💕 See the magic of books 😀😀😀😀😀😁😁😁😁 One more thing, which one do you recommend me to start with? Me Before You

I’ve never ever seen a movie thriller and felt that I want to see the film right now like I did. I also wanted to go, buy the book, and read it. I didn’t do it, but this thriller is one of the best ones that I’ve ever seen. I’m not a romantic person , at all, but I actually was about to cry  watching this. If you haven’t watch it yet, watch it now. You can thank me later.

Leonardo Dicaprio winning the Oscars

I’m sure that I’m not the only one that was happy to see this finally happening. This man is an amazing actor,  and he definitely deserves it.

Morning runs/walks

No need to speak, this is the best thing that you can start your day with.

This one

Try to watch this without crying.

Simple things can and do make us happy, remember that.Talk to you soon insha’ALLAH😊😊😊

It’s Up to You

Standard

Salam dear readers,

I’m happy to be finally back. I know I don’t write as often as I should do, nor as often as I want to.

Today, I decided to write a very random post, just chatting with you. This is a post for all of us to get organized, and to do do more things in our lives.. This is me talking out loud to myself and to all of you.

What can we/ should we do to make our life more effective? How can we make everyday a happy day?

It’s Up To Us.

Here are some small things to do so as to be more effective. These are some of the things that I’m already doing, things that I always try to do, and things that I will start doing.

kakp

Use your online time effectively

Instead of spending hours and hours in checking social media, chatting, or basically doing nothing, we can spend this time learning new things, discovering new cultures and greeting new knowledge. An example of this for me would be watching TED talks. These talks are wonderful ways to learn new things. They make me think of new creative things.

Make “to do” list and a ” did” list

I started doing this when I was really young, especially the “to do” list. It really hepls me in doing many things. It would make you very organized, and it will help you identify what you want to do, what you need to do, and what you have accomplished.

Start leaning something, a new thing

Focus on learning a thing, a special thing. Whether it was a new language, or a new craft, the most important thing is to use your free time effectively.

Wake up earlier

Yes, it’s a very simple step, but very hard. We like sleeping, and sometimes we don’t get enough sleep at night, or we spend late hours in reading or watching something that we replace that time in the morning, specially on holidays and weekends. You need to stop that. Wake up earlier, and go for a run or a walk. Personally, I love doing that. Do something that you love.  This will help you getting more organized, and using your day effectively.

Read, Read , and Read a lot

Did you think that I’m going to write a whole post on how to be more effective without even mentioning reading, books, and reading? Silly you, of course, I will. Reading is essential. If you can read, and you don’t, then you are making the worse outrageous crime against your own self. Go and read. Understand what you’re reading, and use it. I will say it for the million times: Reading is living.

That’s it for today. I hope you’ll find these steps helpful, and you will start using them.

Do not forget to like and share this post if you did like it. I will talk to you soon insha’ALLAH.

My 2016 Bookish Goals

Standard

Salam dear friends,

Today, I want to share with you some of my bookish resolutions for this year. I won’t be specified in my goals. I just will share what number of books and what kind of bookish things I want to do this year.

Read 50 books, if not more insha’ALLAH.

Read a classic per month.

Read 5 French books.

Reread some of my favorite books.

Read some trilogies, 3 or 4.

Start some series.

 Read 10+ Arabic books.

Read some new genres.

Read translation literature.

Decrease the number of my books in my TBR.

So those are my top 10 bookish goals for 2016. It’s a very brief post, I know. Talk to you soon insha’ALLAH.
